Blue Ocean Wireless provides a global FleetBroadband and GSM mobile service specifically focused on deep sea merchant ships.
To enable your vessel with a GSM network Blue Ocean Wireless and its installation partner Seacom electronics need to install a range of ship-based equipment.
FleetBroadband
The Blue Ocean Wireless FleetBroadband service uses an Inmarsat FB250 satellite terminal* manufactured by JRC which provides simultaneous voice and high-speed data services through a compact antenna.
The terminal itself weighs just 7.4kg, is approximately 25 cm in diameter and is mounted on the antenna.
GSC-45
The terminal is located on the bridge of the vessel and is connected to a below deck unit via a simple single coax cable.
*An FB500 satellite terminal is available on request.
GSM
The FleetBroadband service uses an Inmarsat FB250 satellite terminal manufactured by JRC which provides simultaneous voice and high-speed data services through a compact antenna.
The Remote Gateway (RGW) houses a Linux server which controls the GSM signalling and call set up as well as the SMS & GPRS functionality. The unit essentially transcodes the GSM voice codec to a narrowband signal for transmission over satellite networks. Once the narrowband voice arrives at the ground it is recoded back to its original form so it can be sent across the GSM or fixed line networks.
The base station (as shown above) is installed on board to provide GSM & GPRS coverage, linking the crew’s mobile phones to the network.
When using the Inmarsat constellation of satellites Blue Ocean Wireless installs 2 JRC Fleet 33 antennas.
